My partners and I have reflected often on all the reasons so many people we know get stuck when thinking about their estate plans. After all, the statistics are stubborn and frightening: 70% of American adults have no Will or other estate plan, or what they put in place at one time is ineffective to accomplish their wishes. Remarkably, among those with a net worth of $10,000,000, approximately 37% have no plan! Amazing…
One conclusion we’ve come to in light of this, and our collective decades of client and advisor interactions, is that it isn’t usually the technical issues such as estate taxes or probate that keeps things from getting done. What holds most folks up is not understanding some of the more basic, common sense and practical aspects of completing or updating plans. All of it is what I’ve organized and labeled as the “seven deadly sins” many individuals commit with their estate plans.
Here is a link to a presentation I did last year using this concept; I hope it helps you or those you know take the needed steps to stay sin-free!
