When Steve Martin was getting started as a stand-up comic, one of his comedy bits involved his adventures visiting France and not speaking the language. After several hilarious examples of his attempting to communicate he famously said, “It’s like those French have a different word for everything!”
Unfortunately, the law can be much the same. Especially when trying to get an answer to a seemingly simple question, “What happens if I don’t have a Will?” The answer quickly makes whatever you thought might happen seem even more complicated and unpleasant than you guessed. Much of the reason: this area of law has a language all its own, and some of it is more complicated than a trip to France!
Perhaps a little primer will help. To learn a little of this foreign language so you can know “how to speak like an estate planning lawyer” click below to scroll through a PowerPoint presentation I recently gave on the topic.
